16 yr old. son doing great after PM

I just wanted to post that my son got his pacemaker on November 20th. He has a CHB. He is doing great, back to normal 16 yr old. His heart won't get below 60 b.p.m., which is worlds away from his resting heart rate of 35 b.p.m. We took him to the doctor the other day for a regular drs. visit and his heart rate was 80 b.p.m., I don't remember the last time it was that high. Pretty exciting!!!! He is surprised at how much energy he has now. He didn't realize how tired he was and how little he was able to do. He will be able to get back to basketball this summer. Do any of you know if there is some kind of protective covering that he can wear?

Thanks for all the support I got from this website. My fears were calmed and I am glad we made the decision to go forward with the pacemaker. Anybody on the fence - I understand.... But we have had great results!!!

Hi i am also 16 and i have a PM

Hi, i am also 16 and have a PM that was implanted 6 months ago in october. I also play basketball and was playing a month after surgery and we looked at the paceguard but it didnt look like it would be very comfortable for me to get back to playing varsity basketball and in the state of missouri you need matching colors for uniforms or white. And all of the shirts we could find that was like a recoil shirt for shooting was like green nature colors...Since we couldnt find a white color we bought a recoil pad and a under armor shirt and my mom sewed a pocket on the inside of the under armor for the recoil pad to sit in! This has worked great for me and i havent had any problems playing basketball! i wish your son the best of luck and tell him he is not the only one his age trying to just live "normally." i have found help from this website because i have found other people our age that are having similar problems!!! I am glad that he gets to play sports and be himself...these are just steps in the right direction!!

Thanks also 16 w/ pm

Thanks for the post. Why did you need a p.m? Do you have a complete heart block as well? My son is truely enjoying life after receiving his p.m. He pushed himself to keep up with everybody with his h.r never getting over 105, and never complained... He is now shocked at how bad he really felt back then... I will try the idea of padding the shirt that sounds like a good idea. Good luck to you!!!

Why i needed the PM

by JordanS. - 2010-04-08 11:04:22

I needed a PM because i had a resting heart rate in the 30s and my heart rate would drop to around the high 20s and my body would just shut down and i would pass out! my condition is called Neurocardiogenic syncope (also known as the "passing out" syncope) many people have this but they either grow out of it within a couple of months or it doesnt happen very often. This condition was aggravated by my very slow heart rate and i was passing out everyday! I also saw where you put that he didnt realize how tired he really was and we didnt either until i had the PM for awhile because when i was having problems i was taking 2-3 naps a day! The one thing your son will probably notice because of such a slow resting rate that with the pacemaker not letting it go below 60 his top rate will increase greatly (at least it did with me) and when he is running it will feel different and the first time it happened to me it made me kinda sick feeling but now i am used to it because that is my normal "running rate"... I hope everything works out with him and please keep us posted on how he does in baseketball!

My son is loving that his heart rate never drops below 60. He has had nothing but positive experiences with his p.m. He's is working out and playing basketball for 3+ hours a day, and enjoying his new level of energy....

You know you're wired when...

You can hear your heartbeat in your cell phone.

It made a HUGE difference in my life. Once I got it, I was finally able to run, and ride my bike long distances.
