deep muscle pain after implant

Hi---I just had a pm put in Tues 3-17-09. I am home & am experiencing deep muscle pain in my shoulder muscle & in upper & lower arm muscle---it comes and goes---when I have it, it is intense----need pain med---but when it goes away (without pain med) I am free of pain. The nurse thought it was probably from surgery itself, but if it doesn't go away or gets worse to check back. Could this be from the pacer, giving off impulses & causing pain?? Due to the fact the pain is intermittant (it comes & goes) I'm beginning to wonder?? Thanks for any input. mc1

probably the surgery

sounds like some soreness from the surgery. I have never felt the PM kick in at anytime. And mine kicks in a lot. But your nurse gave you good advice. Bowlrbob

you may want to use alternating warm and cool packs for a bit, I wouldn't think it would be the pacer, usually this will pass in 10 to 14 days,

Deep Muscle Pain

Hi.

Perhaps you should keep a pain diary and see if there is a pattern....what are you usually doing when it happens and most importantly (the docs always ask this...) what, if anything, improves the pain.

I too think it may be that you are still in the recovery stage as most people experience some discomfort for a few weeks after implant. BUT.....pain is an indicator of something not just right, so please keep an eye on this and report it to your doctor (again).

Perhaps your doctor could get you an Xray or CT scan just to see if the wires and device are still in their proper place.

Don't let this go too long.

Source of pain

From your description of the nature of the pain (coming and going) it sounds more like the result of being placed in a physically stressful position during the surgery. The O.R. staff have a tendency to flop your arm, shoulder, and neck around into any position that is convenient for them. After all you under an anesthetic and can't complain.

Likely it will go away after a few days. While making sure not to lift your arm past shoulder height some stretching might help.

Is it both arms??

What side did they put the PM on and is it both shoulders and arms that are feeling the pain or is one arm and shoulder? I had a PM put in on 09/17/08 and 2 days after surgery I had intense pain in my right shoulder and right arm. I was awake when they put the PM in me so it was not a bad position theey had put me in. I ended up having nerve damage in the Bracial plexus or Brachial neuritus and also I dealing with a frozen shoulder. I did suffer from a faint and fall prior to having the PM put in so may have damaged due to the fall?? Curious about your pain thou!
