Pacemaker coming!

Hello,

I just found out last week that I will be getting a pacemaker in the next few weeks. I am dealing with the news now but it hit me pretty hard in the beginning. I always thought it was for older people, I am only 26. I found this site yesterday and already it has been a HUGE help in giving me information. A little scary at times though reading the complications postings. Just wanted to see if anyone had any advice of what I should do or what questions to ask before I get t...

Atrial Preference Pacing

I saw my EP on Monday, and some changes were made to my pacemaker because of high rate episodes. The atrial preference pacing feature was turned on in order to make the pacemaker keep up with these episodes in hopes that it will pace me out of the abnormal rhythms. I have been having strange feelings since these adjustments were made. When my heart rate gets up, the pacemaker paces me even faster to try and sustain a more normal rhythm. Has anyone had any experiance with this feature?

Side effects

I am taking propofonone 3 times a day and want to know if anyone is having unusual side effects. Also five months prior to my condition (had icd implanted 6-19-08) I found that I can't smell or taste most things. Fruits and vegetables I can taste because of the strong flavor, I can also taste sweets, sour and salt. I am only 52 years old. Any suggestion other than a ENT?

Pain

It's 3 weeks now since I had my pacemaker.
The area around the pacemaker is still very tender , and sometimes a throbbing pain, worst if clothing touches that area. The pain is like someone stick a needle there, like a stinging or pulling pain. In the morning, it gets better but gets worst as the day goes on. When I stand up, it's like something pulling the skin downwards on the chest.
Also not much feeling in this area; quite numb.
Is this normal? how long to go before it gets be...

PS To Whom do I believe?

Thanks for your input, I figured it would be safe to wait another 6-8 weeks because I do a lot of lifting and stay active, I don't have much trouble keeping my weight down. Also when my heart stopped it stopped for an extended period. However I was surprised at how long most of you were told to keep your sling on. I was told to keep it on for only 48 hours. They did tell me to keep my arm down for a month, but the sling was off in 2 days.

40 years with a pacemaker

August 5, I celebrated 40 years with a pacemaker. I received my first one when I was seven after having open heart surgery for a ASD.

I have survived two cardiac arrests and a heart attack. I received an ICD in Jan 2005 which is my 12th device. Aug 2006 I had my second open heart surgery to replace the mitral valve.

I don't know everything there is to having a pacemaker. I find I am learning all the time. I think the Doctors that work with me are also learning about...

Who do I believe?

I just got back from my first month follw up, I had my pacemaker installed July 5th.The doctor told me everything looked good and that I could resume doing all the activities and workload that I had before the operation. I asked him twice just to make sure, and so that my wife could hear it again. I could do heavy lifting, exercise, jogging etc. etc. He said go for it. The St. Jude rep came in after him to check out the settings and make any adjustments if necessary and we asked him if he could...

I'm a pacemaker virgin! feeling a bit low!

Hello from UK!

Well I am the proud (?) owner of 'Gerry' the Pacemaker from 24th July 08. Feeling somewhat low generally as four weeks ago I didn't even know how ill I was!

I was just getting a bit breathless going upstairs and feeling a bit tired.... I just thought that was me being a busy 43 year old mum of two!

So imagine my horror when a routine test showed a pulse rate of 35!!!! I was admitted into Poole General Hospital for my pacemaker procedure!

Traveling Pacemaker

There have been a number of posts recently concerning a pacemaker migrating away from the original site. Here is reprint of a section in the Medtronics Implant Procedures section of the technical manual.

Securing the Pacemaker
A suture placed through the suture hole located in the connector assembly area helps secure the pacemaker in the subcutaneous pocket, thus minimizing post-implant rotation and migration of the device. Use normal surgical needles to penetrate the suture hole...

Mustard procedure: a-fib

I was wondering if there is anyone who had the mustard procedure and had a pacemaker in. What were the reasons for the pacemaker . I have been in a-fib for the last 37 years, and it has never effected me in anyway. My heart rate is now 47-50bpm and at night it goes as low as 28bpm. They now want to put in a pacemaker because of my low heart rate. They also want to try and change my heart rhythm, but no one has ever suggested that before. I was wonder if there was anyone who had the same th...
