My 12 y/o son came home today from Children's Hospital, Minneapolis, MN. He had severe abdominal pain May 1st. That was his only symptom. He was in complete heart block. His HR was 20-30. They are saying probably congenital though he's being prophylactically treated with penicillin for 6 months. His ASO titer was elevated w/o symptoms of strep.
Any advice, any encouragement would be great. He has a Medtronic Adapta.
Thank you

4 days later
Hey there guys, I want to start by saying you guys are the best support team I have ever encountered. I am 4 days in to my PM, I will say this, it is very sore and I cannot believe that I feel it kick in as much as I do but, I do feel some what better. I have been told by the PM man that my settings are set to the side of safety with 60 being the minimum. I must say that feels way to high. I can feel the PM kick in and it gives me the thoughts of all my symptoms before I got the PM. But within s...
laid off
I am writing for my brother. We live in Detroit and with the economy my brother was laid off. he has no insurance and needs his pacemaker replaced. He has been denied for medicaid and we are looking into insurance.
Does anyone know of a probono service for people in need?
new to pacemaker
Hi I had a pacemaker implanted in oct 2009 following ohs to replace a bicuspid aortic valve. when I woke up from surgery they were concerned that a blockage had occured from the new valve and the lower part of my heart was no longer hearing the top part. I was shocked that this could happen as I was in perfect health except for the valve and had 3 opinions at the top centers, Mayo, cleveland, and Northwestern. No one ever mentioned this could occur. I am single and an active sports enthusias...
Dizzy Etc.
Hi All,
Back again. I got my 2nd PM placed in mid-January this year. Everything was going along swimmingly except for the dizzy/light-headed stuff.
One morning, after a normal swim practice, I collapsed while walking to my car and ended up in the hospital for a couple days while the figured out what happened - I got banged up a bit - my head(I guess) hit the pavement.
So, I have to hydrate (thank you TraceyE and Pookie) all the time. I am usually drinking Powerade Zero befor...
Dizzy Etc.
Hi All,
I might be able to get it all in this time.
I had a tune-up visit with my pacemaker lady about 2 weeks ago. They are all cautious when doing this stuff - one or two small tweeks at a time. She told me that if they do a bunch of changes, then it would be very difficult to tell what adjustments actually helped. I am to "use" it for a few weeks and then call to schedule for some more tweeking. She told me that my new PM has a minute vent (I think that is what she called it)...
did i need this?
Hello everyone,
2 weeks ago i went to my doctor for dizziness, he sent me to a cardiologist who ran some tests. in addition to the atrial fib that i have had for 30 years, they said that i have leaky valves, high pressures within my heart and the thing that concerned them the most, sometimes my heart stops up to 3 seconds. So they convinced me that i needed a pacemaker. i got it on 4/21, recovering well but still got the same dizziness. Im getting a terrible feeling that i might have done a...
Dizzy Etc.
Hi All,
I'm having trouble posting my response to your messages. I may do this in more than one message.
History(thank you BillMFI): A-Fib in late 2004. 2 failed cardioversion attempts - lost heart rhythm. First PM in march 2005.
Continuing Masters Swimming became more of a challenge - motion sensor only works when I am vertical. Lots of hyperventilating helped to keep me from being lapped by the other swimmers in my lane.

swelling
Hi, I am still swollen...I know it is the same as after one week and now I am three weeks since the surgery. Just needing reassurance that it will eventually be not swollen. I don't see the dr. for another 10 days so am anxious about that. Think she might not let me drive yet because it is still swollen. Already had stitches out after one week and then saw how swollen it was. It seems to be stretching my skin and it quite irritating. My shoulder seems sore and I do not sleep well at all....
Dizzy, Light-headed, Black-out
Hi,
I have noticed that many of us experience dizzy spells which seem to be one of the things that come with having pacemakers.
What I'd like to know is how do you cope with it?
Since I have had my old PM replaced back in mid-January this year, I have had more light-headed spells and have blacked out twice. I have been back to you cardiologist for "tune-ups" in this new one which seem to be helping.
Anyhow, I'd like to know what others have done or are doing.
New, kinda long
Hello,
I'm new to this forum and I wanted to make my first post here. I'm 20 years old. I have a 15 month old son. Last year i got my pacemaker put it. During my pregnancy I had strange heart problems. After I had my son while I was waiting to be discharged to go home my pulse jumped between 260-300 BPM for over 10 minutes. They had a nearly impossible time getting it down. I met with a cardiologist and he sent me for an ablation. I woke up to an emergency pacer hanging out from my ri...
be well
Hi everyone.
I am 18 years old. I was born with third degree congenital heartblock with a resting heart rate of about 30 bpm. I was implanted with my first pacemaker when I was 8 days old. At the time I was the youngest person ever to have a pacemaker device implanted. This was in 1992. I have had my pacemaker changed three times, once when I was 2 because of a broken lead, once in 3rd grade because of a drained battery, and again in 9th grade again from a drained battery. My pacer is act...
and other questions-swelling ,tingling recovery
I just had a pacemaker put in two weeks and a day ago. I am quite swollen still. How long does that take to go down to normal? I also get twinges ...it that normal? I am still having a hard time adjusting. I only found out 3/30 that I needed a pacemaker or I had a blockage after the stress test I was told it would be a pacemaker and had the surgery the following Monday 4/5. This site seems to be helping a bit. I do not know anyone in my circle of friends who has a pacemaker so I have no o...

Hello to my new friends.
With all of the information that I have received from all of you and others, I have decided to go ahead and have my defibrillator put in this Tuesday. I still do have some doubts, but what the heck I'm not a Doctor. All that I can do is pray that all goes well.
Now this next part will sound like a contradiction with the word prayer, however that is why I pray because I am not perfect!
If you have a defibrillator can you play and be around...
Many Thanks
Many thanks to all of you who read and replied to my Pep Talk post. I sat down tonight and read them all to my husband. He is/was a little in the dark about the way this site works but he was blown away by all the support and kind encouragement people offered. We were able to talk for about an hour and he tapped right into everything all of you said and helped reach the rational side of my senses all the more.
Words just cannot express my sincerest gratitude to this site and all of yo...
Thankful for my pacer.
I have had my pacer for 2 1/2 years. I haven't had any problems. Feel much better. It took a year to adjust to the pacer but now I forget I even have it.

This is my 1st post and my 1st day as a member. I was implanted with a st jude medical dual lead pacer on feb 2nd of this year after experiencing total heart block in the hospital and being flatline for a total of 50 seconds before being brought back. And after being brought back I had a very irregular heart beat with tach and then periods of brady. After becoming coherant again I was constantly worried about dying and had to be medicated to even sleep. I was so anxious and afraid I was going to...
Pep Talk
Hi everyone,
Been going through a rough time and could use a pep talk. I am realizing that I am scared of the PM and times when I may be pacing. I am scared that I have it. I went to the dr. and was pacing 5% of the time as compared to 1% like before. Am I getting worse? I am having a hard time with confidence and self esteem lately. It's been no secret that I am having a hard time accepting it. I am still frightened I will pass away like my father did.
I just feel frightened al...
