BiotroniK EVIA no interference with following...

Hi

I'm a new PM recipient and a active person who works as a mountain guide. I have had lots of questions about what will interfere with my PM as I am in the outdoors a lot and using electronic devices for safety and navigation. At the time of writing this I am 8 weeks since my Aortic Valve replacement surgery and 7 weeks from PM implant surgery. I am very glad to have found this site!

Below is taken from an email I got from Biotronik regarding questions I had about inte...

Follow-up to my question about softball

A few months ago I posted a question about what should I wear to protect myself while playing softball. My cardiologist cleared me to play as long as I protected my device (my PM is on the right side). I finally ended up purchasing a catcher's chest protector. I played this position the whole season and it worked out well. I tripped once scoring in a game but landed on my knee and not my chest. Still, it would be idea to be able to wear something when I am at bat that can attache to my shir...

Tubing and water skiing?

Another crazy "can I do this" question. Now that summer has finally arrived here in MN I am wondering if anyone out there has gone tubing or water skiing. Thinking of some of my past episodes on the tube and it can be rather rough and high impact so not sure that it's a good idea.

Can I do bicep curls with a pm?

I am a 33yr active male with a pm since august 2010, due to an av block 3rd degree.

I am working out 2-3 times a week and have been wondering whether I can do bicep curls without risking to damage my leads? my doctor said bench presses and dips are fine, but no pull ups, no rowing machines and similar. I guess biceps is not something "similar" or is it?

PS: I know there's quite a few threads on weightlifting in here, but I couldn't find an answer.

hand weights

I'd like to start lifting hand held weights because my arms have gotten extremely flabby over the past 8 weeks (post PM surgery).
How heavy do you think I can go? 4,5, 10, 20 lbs?
I used to attend a "Body Pump" class where we lifted barbells to choreographed routines. I lifted up to 20-40 lbs. Will I ever be able to do this again? My arms are in terrible shape!

Getting the heart rate up after Bi-V implant

Hi Everyone!

I am 24 and had my first defibrilator implanted in 2009 due to a low ejection fraction. Though my condition remains stable, and I can go about my days without any issues, it was upgraded to a Bi-v pacer a few months ago with the hopes of improving function.

Other than adjusting to the device, and the way it paces my PVC's (which can sometimes feel worse than the PVC itself!), I have been fine. I feel that my normal daily level of activity is improved, but I hav...

Bit of advice please !

l have dusted down my exercise bike & had a session on it earlier (felt good) l am fairly sure there shouldn't be a problem with the handle bar pulse checking "thingy" but could one of you clever people confirm please.
Another question l have is, my PM is set at lowest rate 60bpm but several times l have checked it & it has been low to mid 50's is that ok? My PM is still moving about not from place to place now but one day it is flat as it was originally & then it will go on its side & be s...

New Workout Program

I am a former patient who had valve replacement in 2009 and a pacemaker put in one week after the valve. I have been given the permission to begin a walking program and a program with a trainer to do light weights 3 times per week. I am loving it. I've lost 11 pounds and 10 inches already. I also love the walking. I'm up to walking anywhere from 30 min to 90 min 5 to 6 times per week (moderate level). I've noticed my BP machine is reading me a irregular heart beat message when I take my pressur...

Mt. Evans on my bike...

ý28.5 miles up to the top of Mt. Evans. 4:00:32 of climbing time, Elevation Gain of 6,873 ft. Just think, a little over two years ago my pacemaker was put in and a little less than one year after I was hit by an SUV cycling home from work and I am back on top of the world (at least as high as you can ride in the US).

Running with Pacer

Hi everyone! I need some advice. After having my pacer for 10 years now, I've learned to deal with it. My problem is that I want to start running. I've tried in the past, and always ALWAYS have a hard time with it. Today they raised my High Rate from 160 to 170. I'm hoping that this is enough to make the difference. Has anyone else had a hard time running if they are 100% dependent on their pacers? TIA!

Golf

Hello, I had my pm installed 6/13/2011. I need to know if any of the golfers out there had to make changes in their swing to compensate for PM? Has anyone heard of any pro-golfers on tour that have PM's?
Thanks, Tom

exercising with a defribrilator

Hello All,

I'm not new to having a defribrilator, I've had four implanted over the last 15 years, however my doctors decided to move my device implanted on 6/8/11, to my upper left pectoral area. It had been previously placed in my lower left addominal area, so this is a new experience.

Prior to my recent change I had gotten used to my life with the device and exercised daily without any hesitation or fear. I now feel I'm starting all over; both mentally and physically. P...

skeet shooting

I had a PM impanted 6/7/11 for brachacardia. I am going to the PM lab tomorrow for a checkup.

My PM was implanted in my left pectoral muscle because I am right handed and my MD knows that I am an avid skeet shooter. Skeet is shot with a shotgun "pocketed in the right shoulder. Your left arm and hand does little but holds the front end of the shotgun (approximately 3. lbs) as one moves the shotgun in front (leading the bird) of the clay pigeon before firing. The "kick" or concussi...

Exercise

I had my original PM placed back 6 yrs ago and so far have had both lead wires fracture. I'm not an exercise freak by a long run. I kept being told by the quacks to "exercise" more and then when I do they say "oh it was the repetitive moving backing and forth of your arms that caused the wires to go kerplunk. I don't get it. Two fractured wires in 6 yrs????
Am I not suppose to exercise unless I have my arms folded against my chest? Also, if I attempt to do just a light fast walk, my c...

hiking

I will be leaving tomorrow to spend a month at my North Georgia mountain home. I had a four mile round trip hike scheduled for next Monday with two old friends. Last night I received a message from one that we should reconsider because there is no cell phone service where we will be hiking. Now, I am unsure about what to do. I had a CRT-D implanted four months ago after a diagnosis two weeks earlier of LBBB and heart failure. I'm 61 and have always maintained a healthy exercise program. My EF is...

slow cardio

Just got a pacemaker on June 7, 2011 (6 days ago)--primarily because a very slow heart rate (brachycardia).  I pretty much rested for a few days then started doing 30 minutes of slow cardio (burned about 340 calories) on my recom. bike. Took bp and heart rate after--hr was 79. Today I did 45 minutes of pretty easy cardio (burned 400 calories approximately)--took bp and hr 3 minutes after--heart rate = 79. I felt some heart "flutters" after today’s exercise session--...

Running Recovery Time

I had my PM operation back in Nov of 2010. Prior to that time I was running 5k's in the 22 min range and 1/2 marathons's in the 1:38's (at 63 yrs old). Since coming back from the surgery I've had no luck getting even remotely close to those times. Has anyone else had a similiar experience and, if so, what did you do to overcome it and get back to where you were? I'm pretty competitive so my slow times are driving me nuts.

At age 20, I will be getting a pacemaker in few weeks along with an SA node ablation. This opportunity may change a five year prognosis into a normal life span! I look forward to being a little old lady with a wicked cane!
