Training update: tough week...

I am 46 years old. I had my Medtronic Adapta PM installed 8/08. I have several postings on this site regarding my post-PM racing and training. Please refer back to my other posts.
I am currently training for the Blue Ridge Relay, a 208.9 mile relay race through the Appalachin Mountains of North Carolina. My team is an ultra, we have 6 runners. My legs total 32+ miles. We are vying for the win.
This weeks training thus far:

Wt. Training

Concern about weight training was a major concern. I had my 1st device implanted in the fall of 07. I waited until a full range of motion had returned and began more resistive exercise. This followed about 6 weeks of walking and stretching. After about 4 weeks of upperbody strength work outs my bench presses jumped by 25 lbs. This worried me at first but with careful warmups and stretching i have continued with upper body stuff My device was replaced about 13 months later ,Needed a third wire (n...

Basketball

Hi All,

Been reading this for a while and just joined today. I have a dual chamber defib/pacemaker put in on 6-16-09. I had it put in at the Cleveland Clinic and they seemed a lot more liberal with what I can and cannot do. My EP in WI is much more restrictive. My defib went off on 7-6-09 my heart rate was 300 bpm. I have a BBB and Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

Here is my question...I love playing pick up basketball at the Y, my doctor here says no way and the doctors in Cle...

Running & heartrate

I have a Medtronic Adapta PM, which was implanted two weeks ago. I am 97% dependent.

I am a runner and with my doctor's ok, I ran on the treadmill yesterday for the first time and felt fine. Running for 20 minutes.

My question was regarding heartrate. According the HR monitor on the treadmill, my first reading was 132. Then it dropped to 107. After which it varied between 107 and 120.

I don't know what type of settings my PM is programmed for.

Thanks

Hi All
First game of golf today (12 weeks since PM fitted), managed 10 holes as course was very busy. Felt a bit strange after not touching a club for 14 weeks, but played ok, did cheat a bit & throw ball out, when occasionally it plugged itself in the rough, think some hesitation was more to do with the mind. Only play for pleasure anyway & it was a beautiful hot day. Have swum several times over last 3 weeks, stronger strokes each time & back to gym next week. At last I feel I am getting...

Beautiful day!

Got my first taste of the pool today and it was wonderful! Had to wait for my incisions to heal up before I could get in. Temp here today was near 100 degrees so I was ready! It was nice to get a different type of exercise than I was getting at Cardiac Rehab which was treadmill and/or bike.

Have a great rest of the weekend everyone!!!

Wrist pulse and heart rate monitor

I am looking at buying a wrist pulse and heart rate monitor to use while exercising or walking These devices look like a big watch with a small blood pressure cup that inflates around the wrist.

Some of models have a wireless transmitter that sends data to a computer while you work out. I wonder if the wireless models will have any effect on the pacemaker. I just need something to record data so I can download it later.

I know these are not as accurate as the regular blo...

Training update

I post some of my training so that some of you who doubt their capabilities after getting a device implanted. I had 3 ablations and a Medtronic Adapta pacemaker installed 8/15/08.
I am currently training for the Blue Ridge Relay, a 208 mile relay race paralleling the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. I am on an ultra team of 6 men. We are trying to win the race.
Saturday I ran up a mountain. Sunday I ran a moderately hard (7:30/mile pace) 12 mile run in the morning, then a har...

Left or Right side placement ???

Greetings to all. I'm getting a P.M. in two days. I read the pamphlet from the physician and noticed that there is a choice between left or right side. I am right handed and play golf a few days a week. I was wondering if anyone has had trouble with their left arm during the backswing?
Are there overall benefits to the left side placement or is it just a lifestyle choice?

Thanks for your input.

how does PM know you're exercising

I have complete block at av node, resting HR of 33, no other cardiac conditions. I play BB and run. Dr. says this is the easiest condition to correct w/ a PM., all the PM does is complete the circuit.
My question is, when my HR increases during exercise, is it the atria telling the PM to speed up and how much to speed up, or is the PM "deciding" how much to increase the HR.? As I understand, the atria is trying to tell the ventricle how fast to beat, but the signal doesn't get through....

Recent Implantation

Had this little device placed in the ole bod on 6/11/09, so I am just getting used to this little jewel. I have been very careful, and will see the doctor on 8/18/09 for a review, and he will advise me when I will be able to play golf once more. Any golfers out there please let me know how long it took you to get comfortable and play without worrying you may cause some harm. The last thing I want is to cause one of the leads come loose. Yep, I have two leads, and I don’t want the doc to op...

Golf- yeah baby!

I played nine holes today with some friends, and was surprised to find the following things out:

-I did not DIE from a lead dislocation or other complication
-I did not suffer from PACs during the round
-I had no pain in my incision site
-I beat people who golf on a regular basis
-My life is not over, contrary to popular opinion...

Anyone out there who is feeling like things won't get better - THEY WILL. I had a PM implant in April, and had some issues...

Sofball

Hi. My nephew is 24 and he just had a pacemaker implanted 3 months ago. He loves playing softball. Is it safe to do it?
I have read that playing baseball is dangerous. I understand being hit by a baseball thrown by a pitcher at 90 miles per hour can be hard, but I was wondering if it was the same for softball which is a lot slower than baseball. He really wants to play again but he's not sure he should. Maybe playing in the outfield helps?
Something else is that he started exercising a...

Just Do It

Hi all, I have been in and out of this room many times since I had my first pacer. It was installed in Spring of 20001. In 2006 I had a replacement. Now - July 2009 - I am told I will have to have my third one sometime around Spring 2010. I have a Guidant 1290 and it seems it is doing its job. I have never had pain or any complications - ever. BUT my pacer now is pacing 100 % and I wonder why it is this way. The first pacer lasted five years and now this one will have to be replaced after 4 year...

Weight loss

I have recently lost 25 pounds and am working on 15 more. Since I have lost the weight, my device is driving me crazy! It's like the extra weight was padding it. Has anyone else had this problem?? Any suggestions??

Horseback Riding

I was told by the Medtronics call in line that to ride on a rollercoaster was a big time "NO". Anyone had a similar response or issues with this? Also I want to go horseback riding and wonder if the jolts from a full out gallop is too much bumping for the pacer area?

Again thanks and much appreciated for the time to answer.

Randy's Nagging Question

Hello everyone.....can’t even begin to tell yall how great it is to have a spot to hear some real life folks to converse with about our shared "battery operated aliens". Sometimes I just look at my chest and say "good morning Master, don’t fail me now"...lol.

Just seems like there are days when the chest area just "hurts" for no good reason. I am on my second PM and the first one never hurt every day like this one.  I have told sever...

I just want to share about the quality of life after my pacemaker, and hopefully increase awareness that lifestyles do not have to be drastically modified just because we are pacemaker recipients.
