Caroyl

Good Morning. I wonder if anyone can help me? I would like to take horseback riding lessons and am concerned if I can do that with a pacemaker. Also what about all the rides at Disney World, last time I took my grandchildren I stayed off all the ones that said if you have a cardiac problem, do not ride.

Horseback riding

Hi Caroyl - I think horseback riding lessons would be fine. How long have you had your pacemaker? Is it all healed up? I am 60 years old, got my pm on 3/17/09, and I am back to riding my horse again. The only thing I am not doing yet is throwing my heavy western saddle up on his back yet, but I will soon.

Just don't do anything that hurts. I am mostly walking my horse, riding in the hills, with a little trotting, for now. If you take riding lessons, I'm sure it will be in an arena on a very gentle horse. Tell them you have a pacemaker, and are a little apprehensive, and I'm sure they will go slow with you, and stay at the speed you would like. Being up on a horse's back is extremely therapeutic and empowering. So go for it, and have fun :-)

Disney World

The only problem I would see with the Disney World type rides is if your pacer has Rate Response turned on. This feature senses your bodies motion and uses it to set your HR. A ride with lots of vibration and bumps would likely result in a high HR.

My Rate response is off and I regularly take Jeep trips over very rough terrain with no problem (other than sore muscles).
