Nothing has changed

Hi everyone,
It is getting harder and harder to stay upbeat(sorry Tammy). I'm still here in the ICU and although no more fluid around my heart, the fluid around my lungs isn't going away and now my hands and feet are very swollen along with my right leg. They had another specialist come in yesterday who deals with the lymphatic system since they think it might be a problem with that and he ordered a whole bunch of bloodwork (thank you porta cath) and it showed that my thyroid is functioning at a low level, but they don't know why. They are going to do a thyroid scan tomorrow to figure it out since everything else came back OK. They are concerned about infection again since I did have a fever and the swelling and the fact that I am showing signs and my white count is up again. I feel like I'm never going to get out of here! I'm so frustrated and upset and lonely and I know I have lots of family around me and they come to visit as much as they can, but nights are long and hard here and I'm ready to go home and be with my family. Anyways, enough bitching. Wish I were giving good news, but that will come in time. Just wanted to keep you guys up to speed on my ongoing saga.

so so so sorry to hear you're facing what seems to be a new issue weekly. I wasn't as sick as you but I know how frustrating it can be to be in ICU for so long and just when you think things are getting better, you get slapped with something else - it just sucks.

but you're in the right place and eventually they will figure it all out....you have to keep believing that no matter what, even though it is very hard to keep a good and positive attitude all of the time.

All I can say is I wish you the very best and hope things will eventually turn in your favor.

P.S. I'm having an ultrasound on my thyroid tomorrow as my ENT found a cyst on it about 3 yrs ago, it keeps growing, so tomorrow is another check.

and you're not bitching, we're here to support you:)

Hugs,
Pookie

iodine?

by ElectricFrank - 2010-12-16 11:12:25

I was going to wait to mention it til I get followup tests back, but will do a quicky here since you mentioned low thyroid function.

I just recently found I had developed an iodine deficiency. I won't go into all the details, but it has to do with a low salt diet. Anyway I started taking an iodine supplement a couple of months ago and the results have been very good. One thing for me is that my PVC's have dropped drastically. I'll have a phone check in early Jan and can get an actual measurement.

In case some of you figure it's another weird frank idea, the whole thing has the blessing of an endocrinologist. He said this is showing up more often since iodized salt is the main source we have for iodine. With the recommendations of low salt that source isn't enough.

The easiest way to check it out is to get some iodine drops at a health food store. The kind I have contains 150 micrograms in 4 drops. I take 450 micrograms/day which is only 3x the RDA. That's enough to provide what I need plus restoring it to my thyroid.

Thinking Of You

Sorry to hear this latest news, Taryn, and sincerely hope they get things sorted out quickly. How marvellous if you could get home for Christmas. If not, then it's good to know your family will be with you anyway. Hope all goes well with the further tests. I continue to remember you in my prayers. All love, Sheila

I am not planning on letting any of this shorten my life. I am planning on living a long happy battery operated life. You never know maybe it will keep me alive longer. I sure know one thing I would have been dead before starting school without it.
