ADD & ADHD Medication

HI,

Does anybody currently take medication for ADHD or ADD who also has a cardiac pacemaker? I was just wondering if there were any complications or people had come across this issue?

THanks

David

PM & Medications

Hi David,

First let me say it would take two people to know less about ADHD/ADD thanI do, but I found your question interesting because I have not seen it before so I went looking for information. Below is what I found and my guess.

"Stimulants are the most common type of medication prescribed for attention deficit disorder. They have the longest track record for treating ADD/ADHD and the most research to back up their effectiveness. The stimulant class of medication includes widely used drugs such as Ritalin, Adderall, and Dexedrine."

I don’t see how they could effect your pacemaker, other than possibly making it have to work less. I don’t know why you have a PM but if stimulants are going to do anything for your heart I think it may make your heart beat faster. In that case if your PM is for a slow heart rate and medications speed it up and the PM just spends more time monitoring.

As for having an effect on the operation of a PM, I will say for certain the answer is no. In fact of all the medications I’ve had to take at various times and those I have seen listed here, I have never heard of a single one that affected the operation of a PM.

So take your meds and don’t give that PM a thought. But if you are concerned give your Dr a call.

Good luck,

Smitty
