Aikido

I'm scheduled to get a pacemaker this Thursday. I'm 43 years old and participate in many forms of exercise, including; running, weight lifting, sprint triathlons and Yoga.

I have also been practicing Aikido for 12 years. We do various back falls, high falls, rolls and joint locks. I have a fear that by continuing this practice a pacemaker lead may become dislodged? Anyone have any advice or experience with semi-contact sports?

Hi LJ, I have pacemaker since I was two years old and I did Aikido during almost four years, I loved it and I think it is the best martial art, never had any problem. I was doing it in a small academy so almost everyone new that I had pacemaker, just to avoid injury at the pacemaker local, but I use to do normal training including jiyu-waza.
Good luck!

My main concern were the rolls, back falls and high falls damaging the "leads"? Any worries about ukemi?

I had no problems

Hi LJ, like I told you, I had no problems with Aikido. I use to do the same things as the others, including jiyu wazas, our sensei use to do it at the end of every class, and some times it was very quick and strong, including multiples falls and ukemis. I had no problem and I quite miss the practices. So, I think you could explain to your doctor and see what the recommendation are. Good luck!

I wasn't really self-conscious about it. I didn't even know I had one until around six or seven years old. I just thought I had a rock in my side.
