Hi All

I was diagnosed with sick sinus node syndrome and had a pacer fitted - does anyone know if this develops into (CHF) or if it is something that gets progressively worse? I have been feeling a lot of pauses lateley and am a bit worried.

Thanks

SSS

I was diagnosed with sss in 2004. It took some "tweeking" to get my pm right which maybe what you are going through. Since having a pm it has not slowed me down and although I get very tired my old energy returned and I still work as hard as ever. I hope to finally retire soon! Having so much to do in a way was good as it made me shrug off the worry of what can happen etc., The members on this site have been so supportive and each day I feel thankful that I was gviven a second chance with a pm.

All the best

SSS & CHF

Here is a pretty good list of possible causes of CHF. As you will see SSS is not on the list.

What Are the Causes of Congestive Heart Failure?
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is caused by other diseases or conditions that damage or overwork the heart muscle. Over time, the heart muscle weakens and is not able to pump blood as well as it should.

The leading congestive heart failure causes are:

Coronary artery disease (CAD)
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Diabetes.

Coronary artery disease, including angina and heart attack, is the most common underlying cause of congestive heart failure. People who have a heart attack are at high risk of developing congestive heart failure.

Most people with heart failure also have high blood pressure, and about one out of every three people with heart failure also has diabetes.

Other Congestive Heart Failure Causes
Other conditions and factors that can cause congestive heart failure include:

Cardiomyopathy (a disease of the heart muscle)
Diseases of the heart valves
Abnormal heartbeats or arrhythmias
Congenital heart disease (a heart defect or problem you are born with)
Treatments for cancer, such as radiation and certain chemotherapy drugs
Thyroid disorders -- having either too much or too little thyroid hormone in the body
Alcohol abuse
HIV/AIDS
Cocaine and other illegal drug use.

Hi, thanks for that info, I keep learning gradually as time goes on.

SSS

I was also diagnosed with SSS. From what I have been able to find online, it is a progressive problem that does get worse with time. How bad it gets varies from person to person, but my understanding is that it does get worse as time goes by.

The pacer systems are really very reliable. The main problem is the incompetent programming of them. If yours is working well for you, get on with life and enjoy it. You probably are more at risk of problems with a valve job than the pacer.
