Weird Pain

Ok, I know I tend to have a lot of weird pains but this one is stranger then most. I have found now that when I lift my left arm or move it behind me (like just to reach into my pocket) I get a jolt through my heart. I had a dual lead pacemaker installed on 3/09 and have not had this type of pain previously. The chest pains I have had in the past that were odd were found to be the meds that I was on at the time. But this is the first one that I have found to be related to specific movements. Any ideas.

Weird Pain...

Hi ShadowWeaver,

I am so sorry to hear that you still have some mystery pain. It sure can be frustrating.

My only thought would be to ask your family doctor for a chest Xray to make sure the lead(s) are still in the proper place.

Are you sure it is in your heart?

It is very difficult to localize heart pain. We tend to identify any pain in our left chest as in our heart. Even the ER docs have trouble with this one.

Pookies idea of checking it out with the doc is a good one. An alternative to an XRay is a pacer interogation (check up). If a lead has pulled loose or is damaged it will show up on the readings.

More likely it is a nerve impingement. With the short time since your implant it may be that you have some part of the pacemaker body or a lead that has adhered to an area with exposed nerves. When you move your arm around you can pull on the area and stimulate the nerve. This sort of pain is usually a sharp twinge type, which startles you. Of course you jump making it worse. It seems like I remember having a few a these early on in the first year.

I would keep the arm active to avoid any more such areas from developing.

Three years ago I had unusual pain when lying on my left side 9where my PM is located). My consultant found that I had a faulty lead which was found to be cracked and so gave intermittent signals.
He replaced it, so please do seek medical advice.
Best wishes.
