concerned

hi,
actually it's my dad that has a pm.he had the device implanted last january and up until recently he was doing fine. im just really concerned coz i'm the one monitoring his heart rate and last night when i checked his bpm was only 55. his heartbeat went like 3 beats and then a 2-3 second pause....

im really alarmed by this coz my dad is starting to feel discomfort and a little pain on his chest area.

i called his doc but then he only told me to tell my dad to take a rest and do deep breathing. he further advised that my dad should lay low on his activities.

my dad has lessened his activities after the operation considering that he has lived quite actively prior to the pm.

im scared, please help me... i dont know what to do.if there's any medication or exercise or help, anything at all to, please extend it to us...

i love my dad so much and i dont like seeing him this way...i want my dad to live..(im graduating from law school, and i would want my dad to be there...)

PLS HELP ME...

thank you,
jp

First, JP take a deep breath.

Can you give us some more details about you dad's condition, why he got the pacemaker, do you know what the settings (lower and upper limits) are on the PM?

Speaking for myself, my PM is for 3rd degree heartblock, the lower PM setting is 50 and the upper limit is 130. As of my last check-up my PM was pacing me 80% of the time. Just after my surgery in Feb when I took my pulse, I noticed it was low, but I was sedentary post surgery, even though prior to the PM I was very active. Now I am exercising (treadmill/recumbent bicycle) and noticed that while I am feeling better, when I get my heart rate up to around 125, I start to get tired and some achiness in my chest (heart beating harder), but then it eases.

If your dad is truly not feeling well and you sense something is wrong, by all means go to the doctor or hospital to check it out. There's nothing wrong in making sure. If everything is ok, maybe some cardio rehab for your dad so he becomes more active and back to his old self again.

Hugs to you and let your dad know he has one great kid!

You know you're wired when...

You prefer rechargeable batteries.
