Mammogram

I have had my pacemaker for two years and I am 100% dependent. Can I have a mammogram without worry and has anyone out there had one since pm was implanted? Thanks to all the females who may answer this. DD

I have had many mammograms since my PM...I have never had a problem...I just found it a bit uncomfortable because of where my PM was at the time and how far you have to put your boob onto those plates.

Like Tracey said just make sure the technician is aware that you have one.

It equipment will not hurt the pm. Just make sure the technician is aware that you have it. The first time I had one, they did a quick scan to see where the leads were before doing the real one.

I have had two mammograms since my PM implant with no problems. The technicians are well trained to do the mammograms for women who have PM's implanted.

Mammograms......

No problem with this...

I'm not a large busted woman, however it worked out just fine. A little uncomfortable, but only for a min. or two. For me it did pull the scar tissue some but the pain was minimal. My tech. is very good at missing the wires.

Good luck, remember to hold your breath, relax and then breathe when they say so.

mammo after pacemaker

by sand dollar - 2009-02-17 12:02:45

Hi everyone,
I was reading the above comments about having a mammogram after your pacemaker. How long did you wait after the surgery? My scar is still so sore, it has been 8 weeks since surgery. I am due my mammo but am afaid the scar would pull open when they scrape the paddles down the chest. Any comments as to how long you waited? Thanks

I had the PM put in 10/00 & I believe that my mammogram was done in the summer. So that would be about 7 months or more. I guess that you have a couple of options discuss with your GP or GYN provider & see if you can wait awhile; or you mentioned the paddles pulling down, my sensation is more of a squeeze, so maybe discuss with the tech who will do it & see if they think it will pull on your scar; 'course I'd get some input from your EP also.

Good luck,

Janet

wait

Don't go if you're still sore. I had my first one almost a year later. You don't need to wait that long, but definitely give it until you're not sore. If there's a reason why you need it now and can't wait til, say, summer, ask for an ultrasound instead.

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.
