Beta Blockers

I keep seeing people ask quesitons about beta blockers. Maybe the following will answer a question or two.

by Jill Ferguson, PhD

Negative inotropic drugs - beta blockers - lessen the heart's workload by decreasing the rate and the strength of the heartbeat. These effects decrease the amount of blood that the heart pumps, the blood pressure in the vessels and the amount of oxygen that the heart uses. The action of these drugs also leads to a decrease in the electrical acti...

Running

Well took on board what was said to me on one of my postings. I actually went for my first run, albeit on the flat and approximately 1 mile, but I did it. I don't know what I was expecting, but nothing happened. Obviously, my legs were like jelly as I have not ran since September last year, but no funnies.

So thank you for the push I needed.

I am seeing the cardiologist on Thursday for my last Test of Effort as it is called in France (bike stress test) so hopefully w...

Hi

I am new at this, but I am wondering if anyone has expericenced any sharp pain, or like a knife stab to the lift side. This happend to me about three months ago. A friend of mine said I looked real pale. When I went to the Dr. and I told him what happened, I was told that it was not a shock from my ICD. I wonder what it could have been?

Hi all,
I am doing better I am off the Zoll and have a new medtronic ICD. It is much bigger then the pm was. I am out of bed and moving around today. I am going to be moved to step down as soon as a bed opens up. home tomorrow or the next day.

I was told the ICD would be moved to another location but they did use the same site. I have a small drain and a lot of black and blue marks but I am alive. I am having trouble with the PC but will try to keep you all posted.

MRIs & a Pacemaker

I have been told that I need a pacemaker (I have bradycardia, arrythmias, av block, murmur, etc.) I also have frequent syncope which was originally attributed to my diagnosis of dysautonomia in 2005. I have had two (unrelated) surgeries in the past 8 months and I had heart problems (dropped to 20s and 30s) during and post-op the surgeries. I have been told that I need a pacemaker by three physicians, including a cardiologist that was brought in to assess my heart with my last surgery (3 1/2 wee...

In My Area

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone on the site lives in or around the Milwaukee Wi. area?

Just thought it might be nice to find someone close by that I could get together with and share stories.

Glad to find you all!

I just discovered this site last night and was overcome with relief that there were other folks who suddenly and unexpectedly needed a pacemaker and still are wondering how the heck did this happen!

I had my pacemeaker implanted in February'08 after suddenly developing complete heart block. I just turned 50, was in the best shape of my life, worked out religously, and in great health (or so I thought).
I had began having trouble walking up the stairs, but was never weak and coul...

I finalley got out of Australia

Hello fellow pacers!!!!

Well, I wrote a few months ago telling you I was going on a cruise. Well I am happy to say that my husband and I had a wonderful time sailing the South Pacific on the new P&O cruise liner Pacific Dawn. I took out extra cover on health insurance and travelled fine. After having a pacer for over 43 years I finally got out of Australia for the first time. I would dearly love to visit the USA but my cardio informs me that I would never get insurance to go there....

HR Limits

My ICD upper limit is set at 190 bpm. If I accidentally go over by 20 or 30, will it automatically pace or fire? Or does it intervene only if it senses an abnormal rhythm, (i.e RV tach)?

IPOD interference with PM

Quote from testing:
By the way, none of the researchers provided information on Conflict of Interest.

"Among 800 tests on 100 patients (mean age 77.1) with single- or dual-chamber pacemakers, the findings included:

51% of patients and 20% of calibration tests in the office showed some type of interference.
19% of patients and 7.88% of these tests indicated spurious sensing in either the atrial or ventricular channel detected on the device rate...

Thanaks to all who responded about Biotronik PM

Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post about the Biotronik pm. Just knowing how to contact Biotronik reps that you recommend, and then knowing others have had trouble/success with cardiologists who do or don't know these machines helps. I suppose I was under the impression a pacer was a pacer and anyone could basically do the correct settings. That was then this is now after almost $20,00.000 later. I appreciate all the help all of you have so graciously taken time to give me. Also, I...

Questons

Dear Friends,

I found this site a couple of days ago and I’m kind of curious about a couple of things. But first let me tell you why I was even looking for something on pacemakers.

I got a pacemaker for slow heart beat about four mo. ago and it has been a trip. I was told to expect to be kind of sore for a few days to a week but by the end or the week I probably wouldn’t even know I had one. Didn’t work that way. It was three weeks before I could even move my arm withou...
