Saw a recent article about problems with placebo's in clinical trials. Seems that placebos' for some strange reason are becoming more effective.Same old sugar/starch pill. In the last 5 years they have become twice as effective. This is giving the drug companies fits. They get to the stage III trials and their new multimillion dollar drug isn't any more effective than the control. It isn't that that the drug lacks effectiveness. It's that the placebo is too darned effective.

Back to doctor for checkup today. He says everything is fine. PM is close under skin - not much fatty tissue there. He says it may be tender for a while because of that. Everything else good to go. I go back to work on Wednesday - I teach juvenile males ages 13-19 with 3 or more felonies. I will probably be pretty protective of my PM even though none of the boys has every attempted to harm me - they do get violent at times. He says I may do whatever I want and I thought I might do yoga as...

I notice that once in awhile I can hear and / or feel my heartbeat in my left ear. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Only other noticeable symptom is slightly hacking cough when I talk, which was something that happened a year ago just before I had the PM implant.
Thanks for any comments, thoughts?
Have a good day all

Please help. I have had Pacemaker 2 wks and don't know much about all of this. I am set at 60 and 130. Yesterday I got pulse or heart rate readings, don't know which, on our blood pressue machine of 49, 46, and 41. Dr. said to go to ER. ER got readings in the 50's, 40's, and low of 38. Pacemaker guy came out and 5 hrs later read me no lower than 60-pacemaker perfect. He said those low readings are kind of artifcacts or false readings. Does this make sense?
He said I am having...

I have become increasingly concerned about the deployment of tasers. It is true that your pacemaker or ICD is designed to survive intact such high voltage shocks and I do accept that that is the case. What concerns me is that it is becoming increasingly apparent that they are capable of sending your heart into a life threatening abnormal rhythym. Such as VF or Ventricular Fibrillation. There is great suspicion that hundreds of deaths have occured due to taser induced VF around the planet. The ma...

I was wondering for all of us on Warfarin (Coumadin) for atrial fib if anyone is doing home INR monitoring? I know the requirements and have done a lot of research on it and am thinking about it. The people who run the our local INR clinic may be RNs but they really only know to follow the guidelines set up by the physicians and the person I'm dealing with wants my INR between 2.5 and 3 even though my providers and I have agreed that 2-2.5 is better for me. I've had a relative who died of a brai...

I thought my experience was like riding a roller coaster until I read some of your stories. Anyway on the 25th of July I had a loop recorder inserted after a failure at attempting an ablation. I had the loop 2 weeks when they decided I need a pacemaker like right now. I got a medtronics pacer with two leads on August 12. Seven days later I had to have the leads replaced because they had discharged from position. On th 19th of Aug. I had pacemaker surgery for the second time. I am at home...

I'm curious to find if anyone else has visited 2 or more cardiologists for opinions about bradycardia. I have gone to 2 --- one says I need a PM, the other office called to tell me the doctor said,"See you in one year!" One gave me the results of holter monitor and the other didn't give the results of the event monitor.
I was told that my sleeping rates were in the upper 20's and my walking around rate is in the 40's and he suggested a PM.
I am thinking of talking to a 3rd cardi...

I had a difibulator-pacemaker implant about eight years ago. The first battery was replaced after five years, right on schedule.
The second battery was put in three years ago. So I go to have it checked last week and the technician says, "Well, we'll schedule you for another battery in 3-5 weeks.''
I was so surprised I was speechless. Last time I had months of advance notice and they drop this on me out of the blue on a battery I thought would easily last for another two years (what d...

Carol Kasyjanski, a Glen Cove resident and soft-spoken mother of two adult sons, quietly made medical history a few weeks ago when she became the first heart patient in the nation to receive a new generation of pacemaker with a super-sophisticated surveillance system.
Kasyjanski's pacemaker streams data wirelessly on the health of her heart - and the health of the pacemaker itself - to a monitoring device next to her bed. As she sleeps, the data flow to a central server thousands of m...

I'm not sure where to start, so please bear with me. Recently, I've noticed my heart beating irregularly again. Well, I say 'again' - I have the PM for 3rd degree AV block but I know my HR is normal, but I have extra beats and skipped beats here and there, it's really worrying me. My heartbeat also feels 'heavy' if that makes any sense. I'm still living at home, but my parents have never really taken much of an interest in my heart condition so I didn't tell them how bad I was feeling until I wa...
Newbie
Hello,
Today is my first day on this site. I got my first pacemaker on 8/3/09. I found out that morning and they put it in that night. I had been having syncope for 35 years - but it was always associated with intestinal problems. Doctors only focused on the intestines. Fortunately I was in the hospital with a monitor for overnight observation (had been having sharp chest pain from acid reflux). Right before they were to remove the heart monitor I had a severe "spell". My strip showe...

I feel so blessed to have this little gem implanted in me. When I think of the alternative it is quite overwhelming sometimes.
